Going to the dentist for the first time is an exciting new step in your child’s development! It is something to be proud of and to look forward to. You can help your child get excited for their visit by talking about it with enthusiasm. Let them know how happy you are for them and that they get to go to the dentist now because they have grown so much! Talking about going to the dentist as something that they get to do rather than something that they have to do will help them to feel proud and excited for this new step.
It’s a good idea to let your child know what is going to happen at their visit. Talking about our team as new friends that they are going to meet and briefly explaining that their mouth is getting a checkup will help normalize the process. Don’t feel that you need to go into great detail about the cleaning or checkup. Our team will go over everything with your child in age-appropriate language to make sure they feel comfortable and excited to get started.
Perhaps the best thing you can do to prepare your child for their visit is to stay calm. If you are nervous or anxious, they will notice and it will affect their mood, too. Simply speak about going to the dentist as if it were as normal as going to the grocery store or the library. Remember, their first visit will be focused on becoming familiarized with our office. Stay calm and rest assured that your little one is in good hands with Dr. Richard and our skilled team.
