The Benefits of Teeth Whitening

The biggest benefit of teeth whitening is that you’ll feel better about how you look. When you eliminate stains from your smile, you’ll feel a lot more confident smiling, speaking, and laughing around others.‍

You also can rejuvenate your appearance, since teeth staining can make you look older than you really are. With teeth whitening, you’ll enjoy a more youthful appearance.

Teeth whitening also encourages you to take better care of your newly whitened smile by brushing and flossing regularly, which can improve your overall oral health.

The Take-Home Teeth Whitening

To begin the process, you’ll need to come to Vivid Dentistry for a consultation. Dr. Enzweiler will take impressions of your teeth to build a set of custom whitening trays.

In a few weeks, you’ll come back to pick up your trays.‍Along with your trays, Dr. Enzweiler will give you a set of whitening products and personalized instructions on their use. Then, all you’ll need to do is follow these instructions to whiten your teeth and enjoy a brighter smile.‍

Typically, treatment will take several weeks. Take-home whitening is more gradual compared to in-office whitening but will provide you with the same professional-grade results at the end of your treatment. Also, since it's more gradual there is often less of a chance that you will develop sensitivity issues than with in-office whitening.

Are There Any Side Effects?

The only common side effect of professional take-home whitening treatment is teeth sensitivity. This typically lasts only a few days after your treatment ends, and will not cause any serious discomfort.‍

However, make sure you tell Dr. Enzweiler if you have sensitive teeth before your treatment begins. She may modify your whitening program to minimize the risk of sensitivity and recommend that you brush with an anti-sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Teeth whitening usually lasts between 1-2 years with proper at-home oral care, such as brushing twice a day and flossing once per day.

It is also important to see Dr. Enzweiler for routine teeth cleanings and oral exams to protect your oral health and fight back against surface stains. You can also get regular teeth whitening “touch-ups” at our office to ensure that your smile remains bright and beautiful for years to come.

How Much Does Teeth Whitening Cost?

The cost of teeth whitening varies from patient-to-patient based on a lot of factors including overall staining, desired level of brightness, and more. Usually, every patient pays a slightly different price.

As you may expect, teeth whitening is also not covered by dental insurance, as it’s considered to be a purely cosmetic treatment. Despite this, though, teeth whitening is still very affordable, particularly if you opt for take-home teeth whitening from Vivid Dentistry. It’s one of the best ways to improve your smile on a budget, even if you don’t have a lot to spend on cosmetic dentistry.

How Many Teeth Whitening Sessions Do I Need?

We exclusively provide take-home teeth whitening, so you won’t need any “whitening session” in our office at all! You’ll be able to treat yourself in the comfort of your own home, and you’ll only need to come to the dentist twice.

At your first appointment, you’ll be fitted for your custom whitening trays by Dr. Enzweiler. Then, you’ll just come back in a few weeks once your trays arrive at our office. You’ll pick up your trays, a set of professional-grade whitening products, and instructions on how to whiten your teeth from Dr. Enzweiler.

As far as overall treatment time goes, this will vary depending on your case. Usually, you’ll whiten your teeth at home for about an hour a day. If you have minor stains, you may only need to whiten your teeth for about a week. However, if you have deeper stains or want a very bright smile, treatment could take 2-3 weeks or longer.

During your initial consultation,
Dr. Enzweiler will work with you to determine your ideal level of tooth brightness, and she will give you more information about what to expect from your treatment and how long it will take.

Can I Whiten My Teeth If I Have Sensitive Teeth?

Yes. Even if you have sensitive teeth, you can get teeth whitening as long as your teeth are healthy. However, Dr. Enzweiler may need to perform an oral exam to ensure that your teeth are in good shape and that whitening is right for you.

This is because teeth sensitivity can sometimes indicate other oral health issues, like cavities or gum disease. You should only whiten your teeth if they’re healthy, so it’s important to have them checked before the treatment begins.

If your teeth are sensitive, Dr. Enzweiler may also adjust your treatment. For example, she may recommend a less-intense whitening product and shorter whitening sessions, along with an overall longer whitening treatment time. This can help mitigate whitening-induced sensitivity.

You may also find it helpful to use toothpaste like Sensodyne while you’re whitening your teeth, since it includes ingredients that help combat tooth sensitivity. We also recommend avoiding extremely hot and cold foods and drinks during the whitening process, since these often make sensitivity worse.
